Organic Pin Grid Array

Organic the pin grid array ( OPGA ) is a package type of electronic chips, such as processors.

The semiconductor chip (die ) is fixed on a support made of a glass fiber composite material. Over and through the support of the needle-like contacts ( Pin ), the signal and data lines to a raster (array) passed.

In general, the carrier is mounted with its contacts into a corresponding socket. Due to the poor thermal conductivity of the substrate OPGA enclosures are manufactured almost exclusively as FCPGA.

The name itself was founded by AMD with the launch of the Athlon XP. All Athlon 64 and Turion processors are also designed as OPGA.
