Athlon XP#Athlon XP.2FMP

  • Palomino
  • Thoroughbred A / B
  • Thorton
  • Barton

Athlon XP is the name given to a series of x86-compatible processors have AMD. The identical multiprocessor variant is called Athlon MP.

Development

The Athlon XP is the successor to the original Athlon dar. While the first model series called Palomino and Thoroughbred (T -Bred ), nor with an L2 cache of 256 KiB had to make do, bring it to the newer models of the series Barton on 512 KiB L2 cache. For small processors for 133MHz FSB (2000 to 2600 ) of the Thoroughbred core was replaced in late 2003 by the Thorton ( Barton core with half the L2 cache).

With the Athlon XP, AMD introduced several innovations, such as the QuantiSpeed rating system or the SSE instructions of the Pentium III. By this QuantiSpeed rating is not the actual clock frequency is specified in the product, but initially a QuantiSpeed rating, which was based on an Athlon Thunderbird with the corresponding clock frequency. In reality, the rating was based on Intel's Pentium 4, but this comparison had some pitfalls. For example, cuts the Athlon XP in games often better off, while the Pentium 4 is video compression front. In these comparative tests ( benchmarks) is basically the problem that different models are each defined by their manufacturers about the performance areas in which they perform best. A full comparison can thus hardly be achieved. Apart from the roll-call name of the processor and clock rates should be considered when comparing always the application relatedness and value for money. In the latter area, AMD offered customers usually distinct advantages.

The Thoroughbred B has additional copper fittings to reduce the interference.

A further modification with target direction Einsteiger-/Office-Markt is the Sempron, based on the T-Bred/Thorton.

The successor to the Athlon XP was the Athlon 64

QuantiSpeed rating

It is remarkable with respect to the rating system is that it comes in an individual case between the model ranges overlap in rating: there are in the models with 133 MHz FSB the Palomino with ratings from 1500 to 2100 and two variants (A and B) Thoroughbred (T -Bred ) with ratings from 1600 to 2200 ( A) or 1600 to 2600 ( B), some of which are operated with different voltages. Models with 166 MHz FSB is available as a Thoroughbred -B with ratings from 2600 to 2800 as well as Barton with ratings from 2500 to 3000 . Models with 200 MHz FSB is available as Barton and Thorton with ratings of 3000 and 3200 ( Barton ) 3100 ( Thorton ). In Barton, the L2 cache was increased again to 512 KiB, which allowed a higher rating at a lower clock rate. The Thorton is a Barton with half ( teildeaktivierten ) L2 cache and as a replacement for some T-Bred thought models ( see listing).

In short: For models 1600 XP to XP 2200 and XP 2600 to 3000 XP consists of confusion or deception danger. When purchasing such a processor should therefore check exactly which of the variants is obtained, so that there are no unpleasant incompatibilities.
