The AMD Athlon X2 is a microprocessor for computers. It is in processors for Socket AM2 Athlon 64 X2 a with a smaller standard TDP and a new naming scheme. Athlon X2 for Socket AM2 is therefore also a member of the K9 generation. Processors for Socket AM2 , however, based on the new AMD K10 architecture, these processors are technically identical to the Phenom processors, but have only two cores.

Naming

The AMD Athlon X2 for Socket AM2 is merely a renamed Athlon 64 X2 and largely identical to this one. AMD changes as part of the launch of the new K10 - generation (AMD Phenom ) the names of its products and processor 's existing processors with new names. These correspond to continue in terms of technology and its application " predecessors ". Newer products for Socket AM2 on the newer K10 architecture are distinguishable by the product number and the technical data of the K9 products, while the name " Athlon X2" remains.

Product history

The Athlon X2 for Socket AM2 includes how the Athlon 64 X2 dual cores, is largely identical to the Socket AM2 version. He also has a dual-channel memory controller with support for DDR2 - SDRAM, which is shared by both cores. The processor continues to serve as the basis for AMD LIVE!. But through a better selection AMD could the power dissipation of the 65 nm processors of up to 65 W To reduce the Athlon X2 with the Athlon 64 X2 to a maximum of 45W. With the appearance of new stepping revision 2 of G beginning of October 2007 the rate was increased with the published on 8 October 2007 BE -2400 on, without the power dissipation of 45 W had to be increased.

In September 2008, AMD introduced a dual core processor on the K10 architecture. Like its tetranuclear and trinuclear derivatives, the processor but in addition to the L2 cache L3 cache and a higher HT clock is, for Socket AM2 backward compatible. In the first dual-core processors on the K10 architecture ( Kuma ) it is merely Phenom processors in which two of the four cores have been disabled.

Designations

Like the AMD Athlon received the Athlon X2 as part of the preparations for the introduction of the AMD Phenom a new naming scheme. Here, the old Quantispeed naming scheme of the Athlon 64 X2 has been replaced with a new version that is similar to the AMD Opteron processors, but something is different in structure: It consists of two letters followed by a hyphen and a four-digit number (eg. LE -1620 ).

  • The first letter stands for the market segment, B is middle class. (G = premium product, L = value product )
  • The second letter identifies the approximate power dissipation, E in this context means less than 65 W TDP. (P > 65 W, S 65 W, E <65 W)
  • In the four-digit number is the first digit for the type family, the other three digits arrange the processor within this type of family. ( 1xxx = Sempron / Athlon, single -core, 2xxx = Athlon dual-core )

The OPN the Athlon X2 processors begins with the letter ' ADH '.

With the introduction of Phenom processors AMD dropped the letters in front of the model number but fall back and leaves it since even the Athlon X2 only a model number. (If economical versions is a small " e" appended instead of prepended big " E " to the model number. )

Further development

The Athlon X2 was replaced by new processors in 45 nm technology with the name Athlon II X2 and AMD Phenom II X2 in June 2009. In 2010 put AMD processors in the 45 - nm process again to below the Athlon X2 logo. These processors were on the market but hardly relevant, since they were produced in very small quantities and most were shipped to Asia and to the OEMs.

Model data socket AM2

All processors for Socket AM2 have a memory controller with two channels (128-bit, dual- channel operation) for DDR2 SDRAM.
