Orlando "Cachaito" López

Orlando " Cachaíto " López ( born February 2, 1933, Havana, Cuba; † February 9, 2009 ) was a Cuban bassist.

Life

Orlando López came from a family of musicians, including at least 30 bassists. His father Orestes López, musician and composer, and his uncle Israel " Cachao " López were considered together as the most important musicians of Cuba and as the founder of Mambo and pulse of salsa music. His nickname was derived from his uncle Cachaíto and means " Little Cachao ". In 1952 he played in the band " Bambú " from 1957 in the well-known big band "Riverside". From 1960, he played for the " National Symphony ", parallel he received instruction from the Czech bassist Karel Kopřiva.

" Cachaíto " became known as the bassist and founding member of the band Buena Vista Social Club. He received worldwide recognition by the produced by Ry Cooder album " Buena Vista Social Club" - Grammy 1999 - and Wim Wenders' Oscar -nominated film of the same name. He was also a renowned soloist. In 2002 he received for his debut album " Cachaito " the "BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music ".

López died in 2009 at the age of 76 years from the consequences of prostate surgery.
