Orto botanico di Pisa

The Botanical Garden of Pisa was founded in 1543 and in 1544 at the instigation of the physician and botanist Luca Ghini, who himself came not from the central Italian city of Pisa. He was Cosimo I de ' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, financially. The founding date as it is the world's oldest botanical garden of a university. The area was enlarged in the 19th century to about 3 ha. 1984, the Department of Botany and the garden came under the Department of Botany at the University of Pisa. 2006, this department was dissolved and the garden under the Department of Biology at the University.

Plant

The Arboretum goes back to the 19th century. The two oldest trees (Ginkgo biloba and Magnolia grandiflora ) date from the year 1787. Moreover, there is a department according to systematic criteria with 550 species. In another department ( Orto del Mirto ) has 140 medicinal plants. When plants of the wetlands some threatened in Italy marsh plants are kept. Mention may be made nor the Department of geophytes with onion plants, as well as those for succulent cacti, euphorbia, Crassulaceae family and agaves.
