Ortolani-Test

As Ortolani test ( after Marino Ortolani ), an examination of the hip in the newborn, but also in veterinary medicine referred to by means of the same name Ortolani sign or Ortolani - Einrenkungsphänomen is triggered. It is named after the Italian pediatrician and orthopedist Marino Ortolani.

Applies the method of examination at the screening in the neonatal period or on the suspicion of dysplasia of the hip joints. To this end, the thighs are pressed vertically towards the spine and then moved outward. In the presence of hip dysplasia initially subluxated femoral heads slide with a click - the Ortolani sign - in the hip socket back. In the case of a positive test in the newborn may be performed only once, since otherwise the cartilaginous rim of the acetabulum ( the acetabular labrum ) can be damaged by the repeated sliding over the femoral head.

Ortolani the test is also used for hip dysplasia in dogs.
