Oskar Fischinger

Oskar Fischinger ( born June 22, 1900 in Gelnhausen, † January 31, 1967 in Los Angeles ) was a filmmaker and pioneer of abstract film. He also worked as a specialist for special effects. He was the brother of Hans Fischinger.

Life

After an apprenticeship as an organ builder Fischinger worked as a mechanical engineer in Frankfurt am Main. In 1922, he earned an engineering degree.

Under the influence of Walther Ruttmann's "Opus I" Fischinger the abstract film turned to. He developed a wax cutting machine, with which he created the organic flowing image sequences. In commercials for " Muratti " (1934 /35) are the protagonists of the ballet music of marching cigarettes.

In February 1936 Fischinger emigrated to the United States, where he received under intercession of Ernst Lubitsch an offer of Paramount in Hollywood. Was supported destitute family of Paul Kohner and Charlotte Dieterle, the 1938 European Film Fund founded. In December 1936 Fischinger signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer ( MGM). Later he designed for the Walt Disney film version of the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor for his film Fantasia ( 1939).

Fischinger was at that time one of the few filmmakers who at the beginning of the sound film in the 1920s made ​​their thoughts about the connection between music and visual effects. In films such as'' studies '' for example, he ordered in the opening scenes of the visual rhythm under the auditory. Fischinger's work and that of his avant-garde colleagues (Walter Ruttmann, Hans Richter, Viking Eggeling, etc.) are considered forerunners of modern video clips.

As of 1936, Fischinger also dedicated himself to painting and painted abstract.
