Oskar Morgenstern

Oskar Morgenstern ( born January 24, 1902 in Görlitz, Silesia Province, Prussia, † July 26, 1977 in Princeton, United States) was an Austrian economist and together with John von Neumann, the founder of game theory.

Life

While studying in Vienna he attended lectures by Ludwig von Mises, for example. Subsequently, he was the successor of Friedrich August von Hayek, director of the Austrian Institute for Business Cycle Research from 1935 to 1938 professor in Vienna. In 1938 he emigrated to the United States where he became a professor at Princeton University and director of the Economic Research Program.

With her published in 1944 book The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior Oskar Morgenstern and John von Neumann founded the game theory.

In 1963 Morgenstern founded with Paul F. Lazarsfeld, the Institute for Advanced Studies ( IHS) in Vienna, which he headed until 1970. Later he returned to the United States.

In November 2012 ( 9th district) of Oskar Morgenstern square was named after him in Vienna Alsergrund, since Summer 2013 are here, both the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna is home.

2013 gave the University of Vienna for the first time the Oscar - Morning Star Medal; the first organization to win the Nobel laureate economist Roger B. Myerson.
