The Ospizio Bernina ( Bernina Hospice ) train station is 2,253 meters above sea level. M. the highest railway station in the network of the Rhaetian Railway. As a special feature, the station has on the Bernina Pass a covered hub for the snowblower.

Location

The station is located on the Bernina Pass on the highest point of the Bernina line on the shores of Lago Bianco in the field of Poschiavo. The Bernina hospice is on the road east of the station. 2.3 km southeast of the station is the Piz Campasc.

History

On 1 June 1909, the station went with the extension of the Bernina line from Pontresina Morteratsch in operation. On 5 July 1910, the gap closure followed by the Bernina Pass via Alp Grüm to Poschiavo. The track was electrified from the start. From the time of construction of the station an official residence from 1912, designed by architect Nicolaus Hartmann and the substation are obtained. Originally, the station was officially the German name, Bernina Hospice.

The station building was built in 1925 also on plans by Nicolaus Hartmann. The also built as part of the station extension covered turntable comes from his designs. Hartmann also planned the building of the next station on the Bernina Railway, Alp Grüm.

Facilities

The station ensemble consisting of a primary building with a restaurant, converter station, officers residence and carriage house, is the " ground historically significant ensemble Bernina Hospice ". The station building is a neoclassical building with an aligned to the tracks triangular gable, making the building received a special width. The building consists of two storeys and a gabled roof with side projections. The appearance of the building is characterized by the use of quarry stone materials for the design of the facade.

In the southern part of the station area is an ensemble of an official residence from 1912, a converter station and a coach house with turntable also by Nicolaus Hartmann. The official residence is built in the local style with asymmetrical shape and has a staircase with brick parapet. An extension had been structurally prepared, however, was not realized. Northwest of the station building is a probably built in the 1930s as a working-class home of the power plant on Lake Bianco flat -roofed building that was affected by the new construction; A flat -roofed building below the depot served as the pumping station of the power plant.

The station has three continuous tracks; in the southern part of the station is the hub. The station building is located east of the tracks, there is in it a restaurant with overnight accommodation.
