The district is dominated on one side by the main road to Lidingö and the adjacent docks, Värtahamnen and Frihamnen and secondly by large parks. The district itself was formed in 1926 after the Östermalm district had become too large and was divided. Norra Djurgården

The area was formerly a royal hunting area. Today, it is with the exception of the area around the KTH and Ruddammen part of Ekoparken, the world's first urban national park. In the southern part lies in the vicinity of the KTH, the old Olympic Stadium in 1912 and in the northern part of the district, the University of Stockholm is located along with several recreational areas.
