Shortly after its formation, the river flows through the reservoir Šance, continue in a northwesterly direction over Ostravice, Frýdlant nad Ostravicí and Frýdek- Místek where discharges from the right Morávka. Behind Paskov flows into the Ostravice left the Olešná and in Slezská Ostrava from the right Lučina before the Ostrawice after 65 km at Landek empties into the Oder.

In the municipality Ostravice can be on the river bared rock formations observed, by way of example to show the geological composition and layering of the Carpathian flysch zones.
