Oswald Külpe

Oswald Külpe ( born August 3, 1862 in Kandau, Kurland, † December 30, 1915 in Munich) was a German psychologist and philosopher. He was the founder of the Würzburg school of psychology of thinking.

Life and achievements

Külpe in 1887 received his doctorate under Wilhelm Wundt in Leipzig. The following eight years he was assistant to Wundt.

In 1894 he became a professor at the University of Würzburg and founded in 1896, the local Department of Psychology. In 1909 he became a professor at the University of Bonn, 1912 at the University of Munich. Students were, among others, Ernst Bloch, Karl Bühler and Gottlieb Söhngen.

His brother Ernst married the writer Frances Külpe.
