Otto Deiters

Otto Friedrich Karl Deiters (* November 15, 1834 in Bonn, † December 5, 1863 in Bonn ) was a German anatomist.

Life and work

Otto Deiters was founded in 1834 as the son of law professor Peter Franz Deiters ( 1804-1861 ) and brother of later musicologist Hermann Deiters born. He studied medicine at the University of Bonn, where he received his doctorate in 1856. During his military service he worked from 1857 in the Pathological Institute under Rudolf Virchow. In 1858 he qualified as a professor in Bonn for anatomy. At the same time he worked as an internist in private practice, as the family ran into financial difficulties after the death of his father. Under this double burden suffered his health. Otto Deiters died at the age of only 29 years of typhus.

Deiters gained notoriety for its depiction of the nerve cell and the identification of the axon, which he described as Axis cylinder, and their dendrites in 1860. His name is connected to the lateral vestibular nucleus, which is also referred to as " Deiters - core ". Similarly, the supporting cells between the outer hair cells of the organ of Corti in the cochlea are named after him.
