Work

Pfleiderer published primarily on philosophy of religion and the history of early Christianity. From Tübingen lectures showed his first seminal work The religion, its nature and its history (1868 ). The philosophy of religion based on historical introduced the idea further and tried to combine the tradition of German idealism with contemporary comparative religious studies.

With his thesis that only Paul had founded Christianity and this should be considered as target and climax of Hellenism, he grabbed approaches to his teacher Baur. He opposed the idea of Albrecht Ritschl and Adolf von Harnack .. He had close links to the UK and the USA, where his influence was greater than in Germany.
