Ours-Pierre-Armand Petit-Dufrénoy

Ours -Pierre -Armand Petit- Dufrenoy ( born September 5, 1792 in Sevran, near Paris, Seine- Saint- Denis, † March 20, 1857 ), known as Armand Dufrenoy, was a French geologist and mineralogist.

After the completion of the Lyceum in 1811 Dufrenoy studied until 1813 at the École Polytechnique and then joined the Corps des Mines. He was a professor of mineralogy at the École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris and was later held the post of its director. In addition, he was a professor of geology at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées.

Together with Elie de Beaumont in 1841 he published the geological map of France at a scale of 1:500,000, the result of geological work in 1823 bis 1836. Five years ( 1836-1841 ) began writing the explanatory text to the map to complete, and the publication of the three volumes lasted from 1841 to 1873. Other works by Dufrenoy are a representation of the iron deposits in the mines of the eastern Pyrenees (1834 ) and a treatise on mineralogy in four volumes, including atlas ( 1844-1845, 2nd edition 1856-1859 ), in which he of the geological conditions of formation minerals and their physical and chemical properties described. He also wrote numerous articles for the series of Annales des mines and other scientific publications, including Des terrains volcaniques des environs de Naples ( The volcanic areas around Naples ).

Dufrenoy was a member of the Académie des sciences, Commander of the Legion of Honour and mining inspector general.
