Out of the Blue (American band)

Out of the Blue was an American band of modern jazz. It was founded in 1984 on the initiative of the Blue Note label, which wanted to revive his sound of the 1950s and 1960s. The meaning of the band was to Wolf Kampmann " less in their musical output, but rather in its character as a talent of a new generation of jazz musicians who should individually characterize the jazz scene sustainable."

History

The original cast was:

  • Michael Mossman (trumpet )
  • Kenny Garrett (alto saxophone)
  • Ralph Bowen ( tenor saxophone)
  • Harry Pickens (piano)
  • Robert Hurst ( bass)
  • Ralph Peterson (drums)

Between 1985 and 1989, the band recorded four albums and toured internationally several times; inter alia, she stepped on the Mount Fuji Jazz Festival. The resulting there recording Live at Mt Fuji was their most successful album, reaching number 9 on the Billboard Top Jazz Album charts.

The formation broke up the end of the decade, because the musicians focused on individual careers. Other musicians who participated in the band, were Kenny Davis (bass ), Steve Wilson ( alto saxophone), Renee Rosnes ( piano), Kenny Drew Jr. (piano) and Billy Drummond (drums). From the criticism the band was often compared because of its function as a hotbed of talent with the Jazz Messengers by Art Blakey.
