Out Run

Out Run (also OutRun and Outrun ) is an arcade racing game by Sega, which was released in the arcades in 1986. The game of the Japanese developer is indeed located in Californian -style or desert-like landscapes, but also contains many automotive and cultural reminiscences of Europe.

Description

The player controls a convertible type Ferrari Testarossa through a branching race course and this case has a blonde female passenger by his side. With the beach Coconut Beach as a starting point it must reach four checkpoints to go through five sections within a set time limit.

As of the date the game was unique in as it was possible to choose its own track ( except the first ). Before each checkpoint, the road splits, what the player introduces the decision on which of two sections, he goes through next.

The housing there were a total of four different versions. From the normal, upright model, there were two versions, the "deluxe upright" and a slightly smaller " mini upright". The upright models feature only steering wheel, pedals and circuit. The more luxurious " sit-down " models, which had the stylized form of a Testarossa, there were also two variants. These were provided with a hydraulic mechanism, which, moving the part of the casing where the driver sat according to the actions in the game. Out Run was the first racing simulation, the supported force feedback.

If the player is built in an accident, the car rolled over, driver and passenger were thrown from the car, and the players were virtually scolded by his blonde co-driver.

The game was very successful and is often regarded as the best racing game in the arcades. Its popularity owes the game mainly to the innovative hydraulic housing, his choice of background music and route and the graphic that the player at that time gave a speed as could no other machine racing game this time. Although there since 1976 3D racing simulations, but these were graphically much easier. The game Pole Position ( Namco, 1982) is considered a pioneer of realistic racing game.

Music

The game was accompanied by a catchy soundtrack and offered the player three pieces of music to choose from. The player chose before the race his favorite melody using the radio in the Testa Rossa. The music was composed by Hiroshi Miyauchi, who was also responsible for the soundtracks for other Sega arcade games. The pieces in detail were:

  • Passing Breeze
  • Magical Sound Shower
  • Splash Wave
  • Last Wave ( music of the high score table)
