Oxyeleotris

Marmorgrundel ( Oxyeleotris marmorata ), the largest species of the genus and the largest Schläfergrundel.

Oxyeleotris is a genus of secondary freshwater fish from the family of Schläfergrundeln. Its scientific name comes from the Greek; " Oxys " means pointed, Eleotris represents Schläfergrundeln, and intimates that tapered head profile. Generic type is the Marmorgrundel, Oxyeleotris marmorata ( Bleeker, 1852).

Dissemination

The genus comes from Thailand over the Philippines and Indonesia to the Caroline Islands and the northern and north-western Australia before. The majority of species live east of the Wallace Line, west of Sumatra, Kalimantan, the Malay Peninsula in Thailand and the basin of the Mekong live only three ways. They are there probably is not the competition of primary freshwater fish, mainly carp and catfish -like -like grown. In New Guinea Oxyeleotris with eight species two tarte richest Schläfergrundelgattung after Mogurnda. Adult stages of all species occur only in freshwater and in all species whose reproduction has been studied, and the larvae live in fresh water.

Features

Oxyeleotris species have an elongated, bulky in size expectant body types, which is covered by small, ctenoiden usually shed. In their coloring shades of brown and little contrasting darker drawing elements dominate. On the upper tail fin base often shows a bright -rimmed black ocellus. The front body is round in cross-section, the head broad and almost to the mouth covered with cycloid scales. The mouth is large and extends back to under the center of the eye or to the rear under eye area. The anterior nares end in tubes that reach down to the upper lip. Oxyeleotris species are four to 65 inches long. From other Schläfergrundelgattungen the genus Oxyeleotris distinguished by the arrangement of the sensory canal system, especially the cross- series, on the sides of the head. A similar sensory channel system also includes the genus Bostrychus, but differs in the dentition of the vomer, the shape of the dorsal fin, the scales on by cycloid scales and other features of Oxyeleotris and other Schläfergrundelgattungen. The first dorsal fin of the Oxyeleotris species is often remarkably small and never higher than the second dorsal fin.

Fins formula: Dorsal 1 VI, 2 Posterior I/8-14, Anal I/7-12. Dandruff formula: SL 50-100.

Way of life

Oxyeleotris species live as revier forming loner in stagnant to slow flowing waters with sandy or muddy ground. They make extensive use of hiding places such as water plants, sunken wood or leaves and overhanging river banks. The Marmorgrundel digs a well in the ground. All Oxyeleotris - carnivorous species feed on invertebrates such as freshwater shrimp or small fish. O. urophthalmus swallowed in aquariums slim built fish half their body length.

Reproduction

The reproductive biology of the genus is known by aquarium observations on four species. The Marmorgrundel spawns on the ceiling spacious caves. A clutch consists of up to 30,000 eggs. The three -millimeter-long larvae hatch at a temperature of 27 ° C after three days. First, their swim bladder is without function and the jaw can not be moved. After four to five days, with a length of 4 mm, the yolk, from which larvae have fed in their first days of life, eaten up, the swim bladder is filled and the now free-swimming larvae begin to take food.
