Paavo Heininen

Paavo Heininen ( born January 13, 1938 in Järvenpää ) is a Finnish composer, pianist and university professor.

Heininen studied composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, including at Aarre Merikanto, at the Juilliard School in New York with Vincent Persichetti and at the Academy of Music in Cologne, including with Bernd Alois Zimmermann. As a pianist, he was unsurpassed among other things as a soloist in the premiere of his own works. Heininen taught first at the music school in Turku and was from 1966 lecturer, later professor of composition at the Sibelius Academy.

Heininen is considered one of the most consistent representative of a modernist, influenced mainly by the French and German serial music of the 1950s and 1960s style in Finland; In this respect, it is there for a leading role. In his work, however, find quite other elements; so there are some neo-classical allusions, and he received important suggestions by Witold Lutosławski.

Even if Heininen as a composer has already received numerous orders early and his music has been performed regularly, he was in his home country as long as "difficult" or " controversial " composer who often felt misunderstood. Nevertheless, he has long been regarded as one of the most influential personalities of Finnish music history of the postwar period. In 1983, he received a 15 -year-old artist grant from the Finnish State, one of the most important awards granted in Finland.

His main works include two operas, five symphonies, four piano concertos and numerous other orchestral, choral and chamber music compositions. Although Heininen partially uses computer programs to aid in the composition, he has published only a few electronic works.

His influence as a teacher to the following generations of composers in Finland is enormous. Among his most famous students include Magnus Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho and Veli -Matti Puumala; but beyond was a large number of younger Finnish composer for shorter or longer periods of his students.
