PackageKit

PackageKit is a general package management interface for different packet administrations. It uses PolicyKit for permission checks.

History

Richard Hughes PackageKit began in 2007 to develop and put it in front on his blog. Now it is developed by a small team. Use Fedora 9 and Foresight Linux 1.4.1 PackageKit already by default. As the first dpkg -based distribution is Kubuntu since version 9:04 ( " Jaunty Jackalope " ) rather than Adept on PackageKit.

Design

The daemon packagekitd provides a D-Bus interface for package management available. Programs can communicate with libpackagekit PackageKit using the library.

Many popular package management can be used as a backend. It offered frontends for GNOME and KDE ( Apper ).

Command not found

Since version 0.4.0 includes PackageKit similar to the Debian - program command-not -found a bash extension. If a command is not found in the system, but can be installed, the user is asked if he wants to install it. In addition, typos are detected.
