Paddy Moloney

Paddy Moloney ( born August 1, 1938 in Donnycarney, Dublin, Ireland) is an Irish Uilleann Pipes player.

Life

Moloney grew up in a musical family. At age six, he played the tin whistle and the age of eight he began to learn the Uilleann Pipes. His teacher was Leo Rowsome. With 12 Moloney won the Championship in the All Irish Uilleann Pipes division.

After school, he worked in the accounting department of the Irish construction company Baxendales. He was a member of several bands - sometimes simultaneously - including the skiffle band The Three Squares. The mid-1950s he met Seán Potts and Michael Tubridy, with whom he worked from then on. He wrote film scores for movies such as Tristan and Isolde ( film version with Richard Burton), The Year of the French, The Ballad of the Irish Horse, The Grey Fox, Treasure Isle ( Treasure Island - remake ), Far and Away ( Far and Away ), Agnes Browne, The mauve taxi (Le taxi mauve ) and Gods and Generals.

1988 Moloney was awarded an honorary doctorate for his musical achievements for the Republic of Ireland.
