The monastery Padise ( Padis; Estonian: Padise klooster ) is a former Cistercian abbey in Padise in Harju County in Estonia.

History

In Padise since 1254 was a priory of the monastery Daugavgrīva ( Dünamünde ) in Riga, there was already wealthy in the first half of the 13th century. Around 1250 a zweijochige chapel with ribbed vault was built. When the monastery was sold in Dünamünde in 1305 the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order, the monks moved in 1310 after Padise. From 1317 the monastery with the permission of the Danish King Erik VI was. attached. In the revolt of the Estonian peasants in 1343 28 monks, lay brothers and knights were killed in the St. George's Night and the predominantly wooden monastery was burnt down. After the suppression of the uprising of the construction of the monastery from 1370 was continued in 1317 which had been assumed to be independent Abbey Monastery Stolpe in Pomerania and thus belonged to the filiation of primary Abbey Mori Moon. By the year 1448, the expansion was completed. By 1400, the monastery possessed vast estates in Estonia and southern Finland. However, began in 1500 the decline. After the monastery had survived the Reformation, it was occupied in 1558 by the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order in 1559 and dissolved. Subsequently, the monastery was used as a fortress, which was occupied in 1561 by Swedish and 1576 by Russian troops. In the reconquest by the Swedes in 1580 the plant was damaged. In 1622 she received the Mayor of Riga, Thomas Ramm, it remained in his family until 1919. After the plant was damaged by lightning in 1766, a neoclassical mansion was built nearby. The building obtained were secured in 1930. In 1997, the family of Ramm earned back the manor and established a hotel.

Buildings and plant

The monastery complex is obtained largely ruinous. The former church nave has four bays with a remote north-west tower. The former examination is arranged around a square courtyard to the south of the church. The small chapter house is located in the east wing, the refectory in the south wing. The west wing is occupied by a basement.
