Paecilomyces variotii

Paecilomyces variotii

Paecilomyces variotii is a 1907 described, widespread mold. He is a major causative agent for mold infections.

Paecilomyces variotii is often isolated from more heated substrates such as compost. He is also referred to as thermophilic fungus, as it can still grow even at 50 to 60 ° C. He is able to colonize extreme habitats and can even be resistant against preservatives such as sorbic, benzoic or propionic acid.

The microscopic appearance of Paecilomyces strongly reminiscent of Penicillium species. Due to the very different potential hazards, however, these molds should not be confused. Penicillium species are predominantly green, and Paecilomyces variotii is more yellowish brown.
