Paimpont

Paimpont ( Pempont Breton ) is a commune with 1621 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ille -et -Vilaine in the Brittany region.

Geography

The community Paimpont is mainly covered by forests. The forest area also contains some of the larger lakes, such as Lake Paimpont and the lake of Pas -du- Houx, both of which are known for their abundance of fish. The inhabitants of the municipality are mainly spread on some larger clearings, where they practice agriculture, and to the nearby market town in the center Paimpont who has experienced in recent years a limited tourist development. All located in the west of the department of Ille -et -Vilaine, it borders the neighboring department Côtes- d'Armor and Morbihan. In the local community Guer consists in principle of Paimpont forest to the south continued. The small river forms the border Aff.

History

  • The Paimpont forest is the remains of a huge, contiguous forested area, which once covered inland Brittany. The Legend name of this forest is brocéliande. In this forest many events play out in the legendary world of King Arthur and his Round Table.
  • The monastery, founded in the 7th century by Judicaël, the Bishop of Saint- Malo was raised in the 13th century Abbey, the Abbey of Our Lady of Paimpont. Length of the borough was formed only from the Abbey with its surrounding buildings for the reception of pilgrims, the cemetery and a few houses. Only after the secularization of the abbey, during the French Revolution, began at the market town to develop.
