Painavu ( Malayalam: പൈനാവ് Paināvŭ [ pai̯nɑ ː ʋɯ ]; rare Painav ) is a town in the southern Indian state of Kerala and the administrative seat of the district of Idukki. It is located about 100 kilometers east of Kochi in the mountains of the Western Ghats at about 800 meters above sea level on the northern shore of the Idukki Reservoir. Only three kilometers to the east is the town of Idukki Township, which gives the Idukki District the name.

The settlement Painavu emerged only during the construction of Idukki Dam (1969-1976) in the previously remote mountain and forest area. 1976, the site was determined to district headquarters. Today is in Painavu next to the district administration and the Government Engineering College Idukki.
