History

The construction of the airport began in 1936 with the runways 11/29 and later decommissioned 3/21, the official opening took place in November 1938. 1941 took over the U.S. Army Air Corps airfield, which after the end of World War II from 1946 allowed the civilian use and the airfield in 1948 granted final. But the airfield in 1951 was largely taken over by the military again - this time for the Korean War. It was renamed Paine Air Force Base. In 1966, the U.S. Air Force pulled back completely. As in the same year, the aircraft manufacturer Boeing was looking for a site that was suitable for the construction of in planning large -bodied aircraft Boeing 747, the spacious open country north of the airfield was chosen. For the new type of aircraft, the infrastructure had to be expanded accordingly, as was, among other things, the start and runway 16R/34L. In order to provide more general aviation capacity, took place in the 1980s, the construction of the runway 16L/34R and located east of this hangar.
