Palais Rohan, Strasbourg

The Rohan Palace (French: Palais Rohan ) is one of the most important buildings in the city of Strasbourg in Alsace. It not only according to popular art-historical view of the high point of local baroque architecture represents, but also houses since the late 19th century, three of the most important museums: the Archaeological Museum ( Musée Archaeological, in the basement ), the Museum of Decorative Arts ( Musée des Arts Décoratifs, in ground floor ) and the Museum of Fine Arts ( Musee des Beaux -arts, in the first and second floor). Historical Overview

The palace was built in 1731-1742 by order of Cardinal Armand Gaston Maximilien de Rohan - Soubise by the architect Joseph Massol - ( 1706-1771 ) after a building instruction by Robert de Cotte at the site had on the previously collected, the former archbishop's residence, the so-called palatium (built from 1262 ). 1744 remained Louis XV. in the palace at 1770 Marie- Antoinette. 1805, 1806 and 1809 remained Napoleon Bonaparte in the palace, and had several rooms to his taste and that of his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais remodel. 1810 spent his future second wife Marie -Louise of Austria their first night on French soil in the palace. 1828 has remained there also King Charles X..

Plant

Erected on a nearly square, sloping to Ill floor space palace is divided around a three-part by a gallery courtyard. To the south and across the entire width of the building extends the Archbishop of princely main building with its two representative classical facades.
