Palazzetto dello Sport

The Palazzetto dello Sport ( small sports palace ) was built in 1956/57, for the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 according to plans of the civil engineer Pier Luigi Nervi and the architect Annibale Vitellozzi. He was born in the district Flaminio about the same time to the neighboring Stadio Flaminio, was also responsible for the Nervi. Characteristic of the hangars Nervis are the curved concrete piers that support the Palazzetto dello Sport in the form of long Y carriers, the roof structure.

At the 1960 Olympic Games competitions in weightlifting and a part of the basketball tournament were played in the hall. The seating capacity was 5,000 spectators. The hall has a diameter of about 59 meters at a height of around 21 meters. Immediately following the Olympic Games, the hall for the Paralympic Summer Games 1960 was used. On September 25, 1960, the closing ceremony of the Paralympics took place here.

Today, the Palazzetto dello Sport serves as a hall for the Roman club volleyball M. Roma Volley.
