Basketball at the 1960 Summer Olympics

In the XVII. 1960 Olympic Games in Rome was held in a Men's Basketball Tournament. The games were held until 10 September at the Palazzo dello Sport and the Palazzetto dello Sport on 26 August.

Qualification and Schedule

In the fifth basketball tournament Olympic history for the first time reported so many teams that a qualification was necessary. Were set the top seven teams in the tournament from 1956. Purpose as hosts Italy, Japan came as the second representative of Asia, as well as Mexico and Puerto Rico for America.

The remaining five places for the Olympic tournament were awarded with a qualification at the Sports Palace of Bologna. This qualification was held immediately before the Olympic Games between 13 to 20 August. It qualified Czechoslovakia, Spain, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Poland. Not able to qualify Belgium, Canada, Israel, Germany, Greece, Republic of China, Australia, Thailand, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Suriname, Austria and Sudan.

The sixteen teams in the Olympic tournament played in the first round in four groups against each other. The first two teams of each group went into the round of the last eight at the other two teams in the placement round for places 9-16. In it enters its second group stage the teams were in the groups sorted so that no team met a team to which they had already met in the group stage. The first two teams of the group stage up to now in the placement group 1-4 or 9-12, the other teams had in the placement group 5-8 or 13-16. The results of the second group stage were taken into the final group.
