Basketball at the 2012 Summer Olympics

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London 2012 two competitions were held in basketball from July 28 to August 12. At the tournament took in women and men twelve teams participate. Venue was the Basketball Arena in the Olympic Park, which offered 12,000 spectators. The finals were in the O ₂ Arena, which was called during the Games from sponsors legal reasons North Greenwich Arena and 20,000 spectators could seat discharged.

Qualification criteria

There are 288 athletes take part in the competitions, twelve teams per gender with twelve players each. Qualified for the Olympic tournament is the 2010 World Champion and the winner of five Continental Associations, 2011. In the men also qualify the finalists of the European and Americas Championship. Last qualifications possibility is then a tournament in 2012, in which the five best teams in the women and the three best teams in the men qualify. Attendees will include twelve teams, the two best African and Asian, the three best American, the four best European and the best team in the oceanic continental championships 2011, which does not qualify in this tournament.

After the FIBA initially decided in April 2010 that the teams from the UK are not automatically qualified as hosts, the decision of 13 March 2011 has been revised. Thus, Britain no longer had to qualify on the European Championship 2011.

The U.S. team qualified in women and men respectively as world champion. At the European Championships also secured with the women and Russia in the men's Spain and France to participate in the America Cup respectively Brazil and Argentina in the men. As African champions is also qualified in the men's Tunisia and Angola among women, as the Oceania Australia and each as Asian champions respectively China for the Olympic tournament.

Qualifiers

The winners of the two semi-finals qualify for the Olympic tournament and no longer play from the final. The losers play the last station in the small final against each other.

Women

The winners of the four quarter-finals qualify for the Olympic tournament. The losers play in two knockout rounds of the last qualifying spot.
