Women's basketball was the first time the program after the FIBA had played a World Cup and 1938 European Championship since 1953. Automatically qualify were the first three of the World Cup 1975 in Colombia ( Soviet Union, Japan, Czechoslovakia ) and host Canada. A qualifying tournament in Canada identified with the United States and Bulgaria, the last two open seats.
