Water polo at the 1976 Summer Olympics

In the XXI. Summer Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976 a competition was held in water polo. Venue was the swimming pool at the Centre Claude- Robillard.

Tournament

In addition to host Canada, the first six teams in the World Cup 1975 ( USSR, Hungary, Italy, Cuba, Romania, Federal Republic of Germany ) were directly qualified for the Olympic tournament. Since the Soviet team was automatically eligible as the defending champion, the World Cup seventh -placed Netherlands was allowed to move up. Added to this were ever a continental representatives from Asia, North America and Australia ( Iran, Mexico, Australia). The last starting place went to Yugoslavia, which had won a qualifying tournament in West Berlin from 21 to 24 April 1976.

The two best teams in the three groups of four Preliminary Round then played in the final round for the places 1 to 6, the third and fourth teams finishing at the places 7 to 12
