The XVIII. 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo took place a water polo tournament.

The two best teams in the four preliminary round groups reached the semifinal round. These included two other groups of four teams. From each of these, pulled the two best in the final round for the places 1-4, while the third and fourth place play in another final group for the places 5-8.
