Volleyball at the 1964 Summer Olympics

At the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964 for the first time volleyball tournaments were held for women and men.

Mode

For men, all ten eligible teams played in a group according to the mode " all against all " discharged. The most successful team this round was Olympic champion, the second best won silver, the third bronze.

For women, six teams played on the same principle.

The Games were held in Tokyo from October 11 to 23.

Schedule Men

The Soviet Union was in the first four games from a single sentence before it then had in the fifth set against Czechoslovakia and eventually lost against Japan. The remaining three games won by the Soviet men again, each with 3-0 and ultimately crowned the first Olympic champion in volleyball. Silver medalist Czechoslovakia had with his 2:3 also recorded against the new title holder only a single defeat, but had to defer due to the poorer rate ratio of Soviet selection. Hosts Japan took the bronze medal.

Schedule women

The decision for the gold medal came in the final game between the two only undefeated teams from Japan and the Soviet Union. In the end, the hosts triumphed 3-0 and sovereign were therefore the first Olympic champion in womens volleyball. Behind the Soviet women to Poland with a victory in the last match against Romania the bronze medal.
