Volleyball at the 1992 Summer Olympics

At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona in volleyball tournaments for men and women were discharged.

Qualification

In the men's twelve teams qualified for the Olympic tournament. Spain was set as a host, the USA as the defending champion. Italy came as the reigning world champion, Cuba as the winner of the World Cup 1989. Algeria (Africa ), Japan (Asia), the United Team (Europe), Canada ( NORCECA ) and Brazil ( South America) qualified through continental preliminaries. South Korea came in fifth place of the World Cup 1991., France and the Netherlands won the tournaments in Montpellier and Rotterdam in May 1992.

Mode

For men, the twelve qualified teams were drawn into two groups of six participants. The preliminary round was " every man for himself " played according to the mode. The top four teams in each group reached the quarter- finals. Then we went in a simple knockout system on to the finals.

For women, there were two groups of four participants. The group winners directly reached the semi-finals, the runners-up and third - played cross two other semifinalists.

The Games were held in Barcelona from July 26 to August 9. The venues were Palau d' Esports, Pavelló de la Vall d' Hebron and Palau Sant Jordi.

Preliminary round

In Group A, Italy occupied despite the final defeat against the USA in first place before the Americans. Spain reached with three 3-2 wins the quarter-finals, for which Japan has also qualified.

In Group B, Brazil, which only gave two sets dominated. Cuba won four of five games. In addition, the United team of the Soviet successor states and the Netherlands came into the quarter-finals.

Final round

South Korea ( 3-1 placement match against Canada ) finished ninth overall, France ( 3-0 against Algeria) was eleventh.

In the quarter finals on August 5, the Netherlands qualified with a narrow victory against Italy ( 17:16 in the tiebreak ) as the only Europeans for the semifinals. All other semi-finalists came from the Americas. In the semi-finals on August 7, the Brazilians defeated the defending champion United States, then won against Cuba bronze. The finale on August 9 against the Netherlands won Brazil in three sets.

Japan ( 3-1 placement match against the Netherlands ) finished fifth. China ( 3-0 against Spain) was seventh.

In the quarter finals on August 4, the two runners- USA and Brazil prevailed. However, both teams eliminated in the semifinals on August 6. Cuba won the NORCECA duel against the U.S. team, which later won bronze. The South Americans were denied by the title holder (then Soviet Union). In the final, Cuba triumphed over the United team.
