Volleyball at the 1968 Summer Olympics

In the Summer Olympics 1968 in Mexico City in volleyball tournaments for men and women were discharged.

Mode

For men, all ten eligible teams played in a group according to the mode " all against all " discharged. The most successful team this round was Olympic champion, the second best won silver, the third bronze.

In the women's eight teams played on the same principle.

The Games were held in Mexico City from 13 to 26 October.

Schedule Men

The Soviet men lost their opening match against the USA in five sets, but thereafter remained undefeated and defended their title. In the battle for the silver medal, the rate ratio had to decide. Japan defeated Czechoslovakia in the third round in the tiebreak, but issued a total of only six sets and, therefore, took second place. The East German team was only the fourth place. The East German men had in the first two games of Czechoslovakia and Japan defeated and lost then only against defending champions Soviet Union ( 2:3 ). Hosts Mexico remained winless.

Schedule women

The decisions were made in recent games. On the final match day came between the hitherto undefeated teams from the USSR and defending champion Japan for direct duel for the gold medal. With a 3-1 victory, the Soviet women reached the first place and thus dethroned the Asians. The battle for bronze was also decided in the last match between Poland and Peru, where the Eastern Europeans had the better end. The hosts from Mexico were able to at least secure the last place with a victory over the winless at the end of U.S. women.
