Wrestling at the 2012 Summer Olympics

At the 2012 Olympics in London 18 competitions were held in rings from 5 to 12 August 2012 at the Exhibition Centre London, four for women and 14 for men. The four competitions of women took place in the freestyle, while the men fought out seven competitions in freestyle and seven in Greco-Roman style. The competition program was identical compared to Beijing 2008.

Qualification

Qualification criteria

At the competitions 344 athletes will participate, 72 women and 266 men and three guaranteed starting places for the host NOC and three starting positions, which the International Ringer Federation ( FILA ) awards by invitation. Each NOC may submit only one athlete per discipline. Crucial for a starting place is the achievement of quota places.

The first qualification opportunity were the 2011 World Championships in Istanbul. There the first six athletes qualified in the Olympic weight classes, making a total of 108 athletes. The second qualifying stage form 2012 continental tournaments where the first two athletes in each weight class qualify, so each 36 athletes from Europe, Asia, America and Africa / Oceania in March and April. In the third qualifying stage to qualify a total of 50 athletes, three men and two women per weight class, at an international qualifying tournament in Taiyuan and finally another 36 athletes, two for each weight class, with a final international qualifying tournament in Helsinki.

NOCs that have already reached a quota place in a weight class, may no longer compete in the qualifying stage further in the groups concerned. After completion of the qualifying stage on June 1, 2012, the FILA forgive last start places by invitation. The Host NOK may use his three quota places in any weight class. Winning athletes of the host regular quota places, according guaranteed quota places are removed, which are then also awarded by invitation.

Won quota places

The three quota places, the FILA was awarded by invitation, received the NOC from Guam, the Central African Republic and Iraq. Hosts Great Britain took only one of his three quota places in claim so that the two open new contracts were awarded to Micronesia and the Ivory Coast.
