Palazzo dei Diamanti

The Palazzo dei Diamanti ( German: Palace of Diamonds ) is a museum building in the provincial capital of Ferrara in Emilia Romagna in northern Italy, home to an important, Ferraresischer mainly from existing works Painters Art Gallery.

Designed by Biagio Rossetti building owes its name to the architecturally unconventional design of its marble facade, which was composed by order of the owner Ercole I. of 12,600 blocks of marble, whose end faces are not flat, but pyramidal and therefore reminiscent of polished diamonds. A polished diamond was the emblem of Ercole I., which he also used in his coat of arms. The Frührenaissancebau was begun in 1492 and completed in 1567 with the Kreuzgesims.

Upstairs are the National Art Gallery with works of the important Ferrarese painter Cosmè Tura (1430-1495), Dosso Dossi (ca. 1479-1542 ) and Benvenuto Tisi, called Garofalo ( 1481-1559 ), and the Florentine painter, sculptor and architect Giotto di Bondone (1266-1337), the Florentine painter Scarsellini Ippolito (1551-1621) and others.

In the basement of the Gallery of Modern Art is housed.
