Palazzo del Monte di Pietà (Messina)

The Palazzo Monte di Pietà is a noble palace of the 17th century and is located in Via XXIV Maggio in the Sicilian city of Messina.

History

1534 was here already a small church, dedicated to S. Basilio and which belonged to the Order of the Nobile Confraternita degli Azzurri. In 1541 it was demolished to build a church on Monte di Pietà.

Architect: Natale Masuccio

Natale Masuccio was born in 1561 in Messina and sent in 1597 by the Jesuits for training as an architect in Rome. Presumably, he was housed in the Collegio Romano and he seems to have the Tuscan- Roman style blend that Ammanati and Giuseppe Valeriani represented there included.

Palazzo Monte di Pietà

The palace of the Monte di Pieta is an impressive monumental creation. The massive façade is pierced only by windows with rusticated frame and a powerful central portal that leads into a wide barrel vaulted vestibule. It runs through the entire building block and leads into a spacious loggia.

Loggia

The loggia of the Palazzo Monte di Pietà has three open after the court arcades. The plan of the loggia goes back to Raphael's Villa Madama, but the semi-circular elements are left out and the pillars and window reveal bear its own rustication, which consists of careful incisions at greater distances and is reached by a panel covering in the case of the pilasters, the almost to the width of the cover plates projecting.

Stairs and Church

From here you have a wonderful view of the corresponding staircase Monte di Pietà Scala by Placido Campolo and Antonio Basile at the feet of the Church " Pietà ". The church was painted in 1707 by Filippo Tancredi, the altarpiece of Deodato Guinaccia. The stairs remained intact. In its center is the Fountain of Abbondanza by Ignazio Buceti (1741 ).
