PAN.OPTIKUM

The action theater Panopticon (own notation: action theater PAN.OPTIKUM ) is a theater company based in Freiburg im Breisgau.

History

In 1982, the group of Nesa Gschwend and Frank panopticon Niemöller was founded in Berlin to show with the aim of performances in public space. The name " Panopticon " was derived from the native to the 20's very close to the founding place panopticon, in which people were asked to show and which were exhibited there and laid bare without their own consent. Already at the beginning put people panopticon sculpture respectively himself out at various festivals and galleries. 1983, a first major installation at the Town Hall Market Hamburg was realized by Nesa Gschwend and Frank Niemöller after a long stay in Indonesia. This installation made ​​for Nesa Gschwend also the prelude to the big wind figures that were a hallmark of panopticon over time. Nesa Gschwend 1986 left the group and returned to Switzerland and he dedicated himself to her own solo performances and art projects.

After many free theater positioned themselves as an alternative model to the prevailing city theater culture in the 1960s and 70s, followed at the beginning of the eighties another wave of new theaters and street plays in Europe. In Spain, for example, the group "La Fura dels Baus " the ensemble " Royal de Luxe " was, in France, in Amsterdam " Dogtroep ".

With the entry of Sigrun Fritsch in 1988 and Ralf Buron 1989, the ensemble has shifted the focus of the productions. Model performed in public spaces, the ideas of the Bauhaus in Dessau were now took up from the 20's and based on the combination of architecture and performing arts. During this period first major productions, such as on Max Ernst, with whom panopticon was invited to the World Festival to Atlanta.

The early 90s, they transferred the seat of the theater to Freiburg im Breisgau. There the foundations of a conceptual development were created with productions such as love and death, a production of two Baroque operas with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, and Bach's Christmas Oratorio.

1999 merged with the ensemble " night work" from Stuttgart, a group of pyrotechnicians to Karl Rechtenbacher and became the Goethe year, the road production Prometheus. Together with the new ensemble member Matthias Rettner productions were developed and performed for several thousand spectators. Use these productions in the guest appearances by now nearly 40 -member ensemble since 2003 in Europe and South America at large theater festivals, among others at the Sziget Festival in Budapest, at the Glastonbury Festival in England, when Tárrega Festival in Spain, and in Caracas, Santiago de Chile, Bogota, Guanajuato, Guadalajara.

Productions

  • IL CORSO, a staging of The Book of Questions by Pablo Neruda, was performed between 2001 and 2007 in more than 100 cities in Europe and South America.
  • ORPHEUS, a piece about the failure of love, was commissioned by Gerard Mortier and 2004 had premiere at the Ruhr Triennale.
  • The Civil Wars, an opera by Philip Glass, was shown in a cooperation with the Freiburg Theater under the direction of Amélie Niermeyer to season opening.
  • Ball feel, a production about football, was developed on behalf of the Federal Government for the official arts and culture program for the 2006 FIFA World Cup ™ and has performed in various cities with stadiums and in 2007 in Salamanca, Spain, and in 2009 in Zacatecas and Guanajuato, both of Mexico.
  • Medea: Voices, a production of the novel by Christa Wolf, was authorized by the author and launched in 2007 under the directorship of Barbara Mundel at the Theater Freiburg in a co-production on the stage.
  • A production of Carmina Burana by Carl Orff opened the season of the Theater Basel in September 2008 under the direction of Georges Delnon in ancient theaters of Augst / CH.
  • Transition, a staging of the work by Wajdi Mouawad, the sun and the death can not see eye were taken in 2009 in cooperation with the Catalan Llorenç Corbella stage.
