Panagyurishte

Panagjurischte [ pɐnɐɡjuriʃtɛ ] ( also written Panagyurishte, international transliteration Panagjurište, Bulgarian Панагюрище ) is a Bulgarian town on the upper reaches of the Maritsa. It lies north of Pazardzhik in Sredna Gora Mountains.

In Panagjurischte the Thracian gold treasure of Panagjurischte in 1949 found that is kept in the Archaeological Museum in Plovdiv.

History

Panagjurischte was one of the centers of the April Uprising against Ottoman rule in the spring of 1876. Though not successfully put down the revolt and savagely played an important role for the Bulgarian national movement. The city was almost completely destroyed and rebuilt in 1878.

Visit can be at the nearby village of Starossel the excavation site of a Thracian temple from the 5th century BC
