Papegem is a hamlet of the municipality Lede in the Belgian province of East Flanders in the Denderstreek with an area of 0.58 km ². The creek Wellebeek which flows through the town, flows into the creek Molenbeek. In the past, it was called the Wellebeek " Papegemsche beek ". Papegem bordering boroughs Oordegem, Smetlede and Impe and the municipalities of Sint -Lievens -Houtem ( borough Vlierzele ) and Erpe -Mere ( part of municipality Erondegem ). In Papegem is the Sint- Macharius chapel. Papegem belongs to the deanery Herzele -Houtem.
History
The Sint- Macharius chapel was built in 1890 during a typhoid epidemic and inaugurated on 10 May 1891. 1958/1959 they built a temporary church, Macharius was patron. Prior to the merger of the municipalities in 1977 Papegem was a residential area of Vlierzele and had no street names.
Today Papegem is a hamlet of about 400 residents. Every year on the first weekend after May 8, there is a nine-day procession in honor of the Holy Macharius with a trade show.
