Papua (province)

Papua is an Indonesian Province in Papua Barat, the Indonesian part of New Guinea, and was part of the former Indonesian province of Irian Jaya.

The province comprises after the separation of the province of Papua Barat in 2003 only the eastern part of West Papua. The inclusion in the state of Indonesia was in 1969 in a controversial vote in their implementation ( Act of Free Choice, AFC). The result should have been manipulated by votes forgeries against the real will of the Papuans who see it as an intrusion into their autonomy. The Papua conflict is the reason for the strong Indonesian military presence.

The up to 4884 m high central mountains runs through the province from west to east, the south is flat and traversed part of swamps. Most of the settlements, including the capital Jayapura, located on the north coast.

The population consists of indigenous Papuans and during the Indonesian immigration policy under former President Suharto immigrant Javanese and Malays together.
