Paranoá Lake

Paranoá Lake is an artificial lake on the central plateau at 1,158 meters altitude in the country's capital, Brasilia, Distrito Federal do Brasil of Brazil.

History

In 1894, a concept was developed as part of the studies on " Nova Capital" ( new capital ) by Luís Cruls for construction of the reservoir. It was built, however, only during the reign of President Juscelino Kubitschek. With the redesign was begun on October 22, 1956 and inaugurated by President Kubitschek on April 21, 1960 The Lake Paranoá covers an area of around 48 square kilometers and has a maximum depth of 38 meters. The average water depth is 12 meters. The lake is fed primarily from the Rio Paranoá and several small tributaries. With the flooding of the sea area three islands, the Ilha do Paranoá, Ilha do Retiro and Ilha dos Clubes emerged.

Around its shores are embassies, consulates, hotels, restaurants and water sports facilities located as well as the official residence of the President of the Republic.
