Landscape

The park is built around the southern part of the Vosges mountains, whose peaks reach the greatest heights of the massif here, one is therefore also called the High Vosges. The peak shapes are abraded by prehistoric glacier movement to round domes, which are known as the Ballon d' (French balloons ). The main peaks are:

  • Grand Ballon ( Grand Ballon ) (1424 m)
  • Bare Wasen ( Petit Ballon ) ( 1272 m)
  • Ballon d'Alsace ( Ballon d'Alsace ) ( 1247 m)
  • Ballon de Servance ( 1216 m)
  • Grand Ventron ( 1204 m)
  • Hohneck (1363 m)
  • Tanet ( 1292 m)
  • Grand Brézouard ( 1229 m)

The Vosges ridge is accessed by a ridge road, the route of Crètes. The largely treeless landscape is not permanently settled, but is primarily for alpine farming and tourism.

In the north, close to the Northern Vosges, for its own nature park, the Regional Natural Park of Vosges du Nord exists.

The foothills of the Vosges mountains towards the west, southwest, south and east are mostly involved in the Nature Park. These areas have a much higher population density and are used in many ways for agriculture and industry. The mission of the Nature Park here is to find a sustainable balance between the protection of natural and cultural heritage and sustainable local development.
