Munster (Haut-Rhin)

Munster ( German Munster in Alsace, Alsatian Mínschter ) is a town in the department of Haut-Rhin in Alsace region of France. It has 4864 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) and an area of 8.64 km ².

Geography

Munster is located in the Vosges at the intersection of two valleys unite ( larger in the south in the direction of Metzeral and a smaller one in the north- west to Soultzeren ) located here to the Valley of fencing or Munster ( Vallée de Munster). To the west of the summit of Hohneck with 1,362 meters above the sea level rises. To the east the fencing flows in the plane direction of Colmar, which is about 20 km away. By Munster D 417 runs from Colmar on the canyon pass ( 1139 m asl ) to Gerardmer. In addition, Munster has a station on the railway line Colmar- Metzeral.

History

To 660 AD in Munster by Benedictine monks, St. Gregory Monastery (Latin monasterium ) founded, after which the town and valley were named. In 1308 the city was provided with a wall. 1354 joined the city with other cities of Alsace along the Ten Cities and Towns. In the 16th century, the city of the Reformation followed. Mayor Frederick Zeringer signed for the " Council of the city of Münster in S. Georgental " the Lutheran Formula of Concord of 1577.

In the Thirty Years' War Munster and the surrounding area has been greatly affected. Under the influence of the French Revolution, the monastery was dissolved in 1791.

During the First World War, the city was destroyed to 85%. Even during the Second World War, the area had much to suffer. On February 5, 1945 Munster was occupied by the Allies.

Munster is a member and the seat of the Local Government Association Vallée de Munster. Mayor ( mayor ) of the municipality is Pierre Dischinger. Besides it belong to the council of six councilors and 20 other people.

Economy

For a long time Munster was a center of the textile industry until the decline this sector also brought to a halt here. Furthermore, the forestry plays an important role.

In addition, tourism is increasingly an economic factor. Munster is located in the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges, the park administration is housed with adjacent exhibition center here.

Made famous but the place has the production of strong smelling Muenster cheese, which is produced here. The dairy industry required for this purpose has alpine character: the dairy spends the summer on the mountain heights and wintered in the valley. For this reason, the area has the nickname Kleini Sweat ( little Switzerland ).
