Vogelgrun

Vogelgrun ( German Bird, Green, alsatian bird Grien ) is a municipality with 645 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Canton of Neuf- Brisach in the French department of Haut-Rhin. It belongs to the community association Pays de Brisach.

Geography

Eastern neighboring municipality of Vogelgrun is Breisach am Rhein. Between the Rhine forms the border between France and the Federal Republic of Germany. On the French side of the Rhine canal runs parallel to the natural flow. At the height of bird green channel contains a barrage with a hydroelectric power plant. About the dam the highway Colmar -Freiburg im Breisgau leads (D 415 in France, federal highway 31 in Germany ). Parallel to the Rhine runs the D52. The two streets cross north of the village center. The district is used predominantly agricultural, forest is found mainly on the lying between the Rhine and the Rhine side channel spell. The French neighboring municipalities are Algolsheim, Volgelsheim and Biesheim.

History

Vogelgrun is significantly younger than the neighboring villages due to location in a former meander of the River Rhine and so existing before the straightening of the Rhine flood risk. The ban has long been one Biesheim and was then acquired in 1568 by Breisach, which sold it in 1756 to Count Waldner friend of stone. The place name Vogelgrün not derived from a green bird, rather, the name part " green" to a resting place for migratory birds on the Rhine.

Important economic activities are the horticulture and agriculture with grain farming and cattle breeding. In connection with the construction of the Rhine side channel was built in the municipality hydropower plant Vogelgrun EDF with a lock.
