Geiswasser

Geiswasser is a commune with 326 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the district of Colmar, Canton of Neuf- Brisach Communauté de communes and du Pays de Brisach.

Geography

Geiswasser is located six kilometers south of Breisach and about 25 kilometers southeast of Colmar. The municipality borders on the Rhine, in the middle of the boundary with Germany; here is the easternmost point of the department of Haut-Rhin. Parallel to the Rhine runs the Rhine side channel.

History

The name comes from an old arm of the Rhine, the irrigation water was called. In the 17th century it was a document known as a fishing village. Taxes were paid to the kingdom mayor of Breisach and from 1756 to Count Waldner friend of stone, which finally in 1770 gave the city to the French Government. 1775 Geiswasser an independent municipality was charged.
