Paris-Sorbonne University

The University of Paris- Sorbonne (Paris IV) is one of the thirteen Parisian universities. It was founded in the context of university reform by decree of 23 December 1970 and confirmed by decree of 17 July 1984. The reform, which by Edgar Faure ( Loi d'Orientation, 1986) was prepared and carried out after the riots of May 68 was aimed at splitting and reorganization of the five faculties of the former University of Paris and the creation of new interdisciplinary thirteen universities.

The University of Paris- Sorbonne went from the former Faculty of Letters and Sciences Humaines (Faculty of Humanities and Human Sciences ) of the Sorbonne forth, their names and historical buildings in Paris ( 5 Arrdt. ) They, with the Universities of Paris I Panthéon -Sorbonne Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle shares. The building also houses part of the University of Paris V René Descartes, the École Nationale des Chartes and the Chancellery ( Principal).

Presidents since the founding were the historian Alphonse Dupront, the philosopher Raymond Polin, the Hellenist Jacques Bompaire, religion historian Michel Meslin, Jean -Pierre Poussou and Georges Molinié. The current President is the geographer Jean -Robert Pitte.

The professors included, among other Pierre Grimal, Jacques Heurgon, Pierre Wuilleumier, Jérôme Carcopino and Jacqueline de Romilly Worms (the second shot to the Académie française woman).

University of Paris- Sorbonne Abu Dhabi

In 2006, the University of Paris- Sorbonne and the United Arab Emirates signed a Cooperation Agreement establishing a new University of Paris- Sorbonne Abu Dhabi in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. This makes it possible for the first time a French university based abroad.
