Paristrion

The Byzantine theme Paris Trion was a military- administrative border district, which was formed around 1001 in the geographic region of Moesia ( Danube Bulgaria). Capital was Theodoroupolis (also Durostorum, today Silistra ). Other important cities were Odesos, Nicopolis and Tarnovo. The name of the district derives from the Greek and means located at the Ister.

The issue arose after the successful submission part of the First Bulgarian Empire by the Byzantine Empire around 971, when once known as the province of Moesia secunda region was again incorporated into the Byzantine administrative system. Later Paris Trion bordered to the west by the 1018 created theme and Bulgaria to the south by the themes of Thrace and Macedonia. After the restoration of the Bulgarian Empire in 1187 until the occurrence of the Ottoman Turks, the state changed over the area frequently between Bulgarians and the horse people from the East.
